"I don't structure in the get go. I structure later. All this manual approach of how to write a screenplay in 20 days (...) is all bullshit to me. It's all bullshit for one reason, because they are telling you your shoe size and your shoe model and they don't fucking know what foot you have. They really don't. It's trying to cram what is instict into method, and they are not compatible. Because the desire to tell a story is an instict."

La red está llena de videos de conferencias y charlas con Guillermo del Toro. Y la verdad es que todas son entretenidas y todas tienen alguna cosa interesante que rescatar. Pero esta me gustó especialmente, y tiene una parte en la que Guillermo habla del proceso de escritura que creo merece destacarse. It won't get better unless you get bold.

I’ll tell you. This is the time to be bold. There is a saying in Spanish, ‘The raging river is a fisherman’s gain.’ Which means, when the river is raging, few people jump in, but they bring out a lot of fish.  This is the time to be bold. If we are not, the self fulfilling prophecy is dying. I love that Chris Nolan did Inception. He did it because he can, but I assure you, this was not easy to push through. Whether bold movies succeed or fail, they don’t go unnoticed. Movies that are timid definitely are not succeeding in this time. The problem we have as a craft and artistry medium, we can only hope to be defined by our hearts. This industry gets defined weekend by fucking weekend, and that is as impossible as chronicling your autobiography day by day. You assume certain people in the industry will be lemmings, but the one who has my sympathy is the lemming who steps back and says, 'oh, fuck you all, I’m going to do this other thing.'

El Futuro según Guillermo del Toro

In the next 10 years, we're going to see all the forms of entertainment—film, television, video, games, and print—melding into a single-platform "story engine." The Model T of this new platform is the PS3. The moment you connect creative output with a public story engine, a narrative can continue over a period of months or years. It's going to rewrite the rules of fiction.

We are used to thinking of stories in a linear way—act one, act two, act three. We're still on the Aristotelian model. What the digital approach allows you to do is take a tangential and nonlinear model and use it to expand the world. For example: If you're following Leo Bloom from Ulysses on a certain day and he crosses a street, you can abandon him and follow someone else.

Guillermo del Toro to direct 'Hobbit'

Del Toro’s moving to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut and Weta production teams. He’ll direct the two films back to back, with the sequel dealing with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Estaba cantado: Guillermo se muda a Nueva Zelanda y dedicará los próximos tres o cuatro años de su vida a The Hobbit. Me da gusto porque este es sin duda uno de los proyectos cinematográficos (más que proyecto, un evento) más importantes del momento, y sin duda será un parteaguas en su carrera. Sin embargo no puedo evitar sentir que esto nos hará perdernos de otras películas más personales y más singulares, películas suyas, películas que nadie más podría hacer. Les cambio At the Mountains of Madness o Saturn and the End of Days por The Hobbit en cualquier momento. (Y ojalá pueda dirigir una de sus "películas pequeñas", como les dice él, antes de meterse de lleno en el universo de Tolkien.)

Por lo pronto a esperar a Julio para ver Hellboy II: The Golden Army. (Tendremos que verla en el otro lado, porque en México está programada para estrenarse hasta Septiembre.)
